Welcome. Green ICANN was initiated with a firm, foundational belief: the Internet must be sustainable. As a critical piece of the global Internet infrastructure, ICANN plays a significant role in our digital lives. Unfortunately, through global travel, server maintenance, and the day-to-day energy consumption of the Domain Name System (DNS), the organization still contributes to climate change. We are here to help lead the transition toward a greener future.

Our Charter and Goals.

Our charter is straightforward: we exist to raise awareness of green initiatives at ICANN and to drive its transformation into a fully carbon-neutral organization.

Our primary objective is to elevate this critical issue, urging ICANN to adopt the major tenets of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and a dedicated Green Manifesto. Ultimately, we aim to see these sustainability goals integrated directly into ICANN’s existing Five-Year Strategic Plans.

Our Journey So Far.

Momentum for a sustainable ICANN has been building through continuous community engagement across the globe:

  • October 2022 (ICANN75, Kuala Lumpur): We held vital meetings with senior ICANN staff and the cross-community Green Team. Javier and Raoul also addressed the community open forum to publicly promote the vision of a carbon-neutral organization.
  • March 2023 (ICANN Cancun): We advanced our outreach through productive discussions with Lise Fuhr of ETNO.
  • June 2023 (ICANN77, Washington): We dedicated this meeting to intensive planning and strategic alignment.
  • October 2023 (ICANN78, Hamburg): We organized our efforts to secure a dedicated session, bringing the initiative further into the spotlight for the community.
  • March 2025 (ICANN84, Dublin): Tanpani encouraged volunteers to join and maintain the tempo of the advocacy.
