Regions

The internet is often conceptualized as a seamless, weightless cloud. In reality, it is a massive, physical network of humming data centers, subterranean cables, and routing hardware—all powered by local energy grids. Because environmental challenges and energy infrastructures vary drastically around the globe, a one-size-fits-all approach to digital sustainability simply does not work.
To tackle this, Green ICANN operates across five distinct geographic regions. By decentralizing its environmental initiatives, the organization ensures that global internet infrastructure is optimized according to local realities rather than theoretical ideals.
Optimizing the digital ecosystem means altering how we address the core pillars of data center architecture. As shown in the diagram above, elements like cooling systems, power supply, and backup energy are critical intervention points. However, how an engineer handles these vectors changes entirely based on regional climate and infrastructure.
