Our History

The intersection of Internet governance and environmental sustainability has evolved from a niche discussion into a core operational consideration for the global Internet community. The history of the Green ICANN movement is a testament to grassroots community passion, forward-thinking policy, and a growing recognition of the Internet’s physical footprint.

Early Vision and the .green Milestone

The push for a more environmentally conscious Internet namespace gained significant public visibility during the new generic Top-Level Domain (gTLD) expansion. One of the earliest and most prominent manifestations of this was the DotGreen Community initiative, founded by Annalisa Roger. Launched publicly in 2007 and officially applying for the string during the 2012 gTLD round, the .green movement was one of the first major efforts to use ICANN’s naming system to foster global sustainability.

The initiative actively worked to bring “green consciousness” to ICANN delegates. Through “People and Planet” events, the movement introduced international delegates to tree planting, local eating, and public transportation—encouraging participants to take these sustainable practices back to their home countries.

The Sustainability Mailing List: Building a Community Hub

As the desire for structured environmental action grew within the community, dedicated communication channels were established. The creation of the ICANN Sustainability Mailing List (sustainabilitylist@icann.org) marked a critical turning point in formalizing these discussions.

This list was established as the central hub for interested ICANN community members, the Board of Directors, and ICANN organization staff. Its primary purpose is to:

  • Share environmental best practices and educational resources.
  • Foster open discussions on reducing the carbon footprint of digital infrastructure.
  • Coordinate community-led environmental initiatives across different global regions.

Expanding Scope: Operations and Policy

In recent years, the conversation has expanded from community-led awareness to structural and operational changes within ICANN itself.

During recent global forums, such as the ICANN79 Policy Forum, Sustainability has been featured as a dedicated breakout session in strategic planning. The community has actively debated how to balance the undeniable benefits of in-person, multistakeholder consensus building with the environmental impact of international travel. Today, the Green ICANN ecosystem focuses heavily on:

Focus AreaObjective
Operational EfficiencyAnalyzing ICANN’s business processes to identify carbon-reduction opportunities.
Travel & EventsWeighing the tradeoffs of virtual vs. in-person meetings and exploring carbon offsetting for global summits.
Regional ActionEmpowering local chapters to implement green tech policies tailored to their specific geographies.

Looking Forward

What began as a visionary idea by a few Internet pioneers has grown into a resilient, multistakeholder effort. Green ICANN continues to advocate for a future where the expansion of the global Internet does not come at the expense of the planet.
