About Us

Purpose, mission and vision

Rooted in community. Driven by responsibility. Built for a greener Internet.

Mission

To hold a living record of every green initiative within ICANN, and to keep the pressure on — respectfully, persistently, and from within the community itself.

GreenICANN documents, amplifies and connects sustainability efforts across the ICANN ecosystem. We track what is being done and shine a light on what still needs doing. We believe an organisation entrusted with coordinating the Internet has a responsibility to lead on environmental stewardship, not simply follow. Our role is to make that case and help turn it into policy.

Born from a single act of community courage: a speech at ICANN75 in Kuala Lumpur, where a room full of people stood up to say the Internet’s infrastructure must stop making climate change worse.Raoul Plommer, NPOC Chair, ICANN75 Public Forum, 22 September 2022

Vision

An ICANN that is carbon neutral, transparent about its environmental impact, and recognised as a responsible steward of the Internet for future generations.

We envision an Internet governance ecosystem where sustainability is a core operating principle, not an afterthought. Where ICANN measures, reports and reduces its environmental footprint as rigorously as it governs the domain name system. Where every meeting, every data centre and every funded journey is considered against its carbon cost. GreenICANN is the community’s long memory, its public record, and its standing invitation to do better.

What we stand for

The principles that shape how we work and what we ask of ICANN.

Transparency

Every initiative, every commitment, every gap — visible. We document what is said and track whether it happens.

Community ownership

Change within ICANN comes from the bottom up. We work through the community processes ICANN was built on.

Persistence

The first blog post was 2019. The community stood up in 2022. We are still here and we are not going away.

Global responsibility

ICANN serves everyone who uses the Internet. Its environmental responsibilities are just as universal as its mandate.

Practical Action

We track real policies, real commitments and real outcomes. Not abstractions.

Accountability

Promises matter only when kept. We hold a record of what has been pledged and measure progress against it.
